Scott and Melissa Shields are the proud owners of Blue Moon Beach Grill.
Scott runs the kitchen and Melissa manages the front of the house. The dedicated kitchen and wait staff complete the team.
Scott began his culinary career, graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Culinary Academy. He became a line chef for two years at Owens Restaurant in Nags Head, NC . He then spent a year at Mulligan’s, where he met Melissa, who was waitressing for the summer. Their love blossomed, and Scott moved to Staunton, VA to be with Melissa, and become a chef at Mill Street Grill, a popular Virginia eatery. For the next eight years, Scott and Melissa worked at Mill Street, honed their skills, and dreamed of owning their own restaurant, on the Outer Banks.
With the encouragement of his family and friends, Scott jumped in with both feet when the corner slot of Surf Side Plaza became available. As Scott once said, “Who opens a restaurant in February, at the beach, during the biggest recession of our lifetime?” With their eyes on the future, Blue Moon Beach Grill became a reality, opening on February 3, 2009.
To say that Blue Moon Beach Grill does not look anything like its predecessor is an understatement. Gone is the black and white checkered ceiling, the glass block bar, and the turquoise walls. Now, Jack Johnson plays in the background while locals and tourists alike enjoy Scott’s exciting menu at the Tiki bar, outside on the patio, or in the dining room. Local art, lots of beach combed buoys, and flat screen TVs decorate the walls.
Daily specials provide an affordable alternative to grocery shopping, cooking and home clean up. Great draft and bottled beers, including Guinness, and affordable wines by the glass or bottle, provide “unwinding libations”.
What is a Blue Moon?
A blue moon is a very rare event. According to popular usage, a blue moon refers to the second full moon that occurs in any calendar month. On average, there will be 41 months that have two full moons in every century. By that calculation “once in a blue moon” means once every two and a half years. The blue moon expression is old and dates back to early England. The next blue moon is August 31, 2012.
